Hurricane Charley in Christmas Florida
August 13, 2004

Hurricane Charley came ashore on the south-west shore of Florida in the Punta Gorda area with 145 mph wind and 10 foot waves. It did lose strength as it crossed the state but not as much as the Florida residents expected. Gusts were recorded as high as 105 mph in Orlando, where power was knocked out in about half of the city. Many of the beautiful old oak trees that lined the streets of Winter Park were toppled or disfigured.

Hurricane Charley proceed to cross Florida in a north-eastern direction and fallowed the I-4 corridor to it's most eastward end. At 11 p.m. ET, Hurricane Charley was 10 miles southwest of Daytona Beach, tearing off shingles, roofs, knocking down trees, or cork-screwing branches and tree tops of the trees that managed to remain standing in Port Orange. The Category 1 storm was moving north-northeast at 25 mph with maximum sustained winds at 85 mph with higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Charley produced many tornados and because of the many directions that trees landed at my property in Christmas Florida, I am faily certain that it was a tornado that knocked down several Pine trees that use to stand about 75 feet tall.
